Rockstar Games surprised everyone by announcing that the original Red Dead Redemption is receiving comprehensive upgrades for current-generation consoles, mobile devices, and even Netflix subscribers, just two years after the original re-release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. The announcement seemed to catch everyone off guard, including industry insiders who’d insisted that Rockstar is likely to end the year with a re-release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Thus, with this unexpected reveal, everyone is asking: Does this mean the long-rumored Red Dead Redemption 2 next-gen upgrade has been cancelled, or was it never real?

According to reliable sources who have tracked Rockstar’s plans throughout 2025, the answer is definitively “no”. The original Red Dead Redemption receiving attention doesn’t mean the sequel will not get an upgrade anymore. Both projects exist independently even if one arrives before the other.

He clarified that his information specifically concerned Red Dead Redemption 2, not the original game, and that those plans remain active. Reece Reilly, who operates as Kiwi Talkz, confirmed he doesn’t have a specific release date but maintained that just because RDR1 got a re-release doesn’t mean there isn’t one coming for the sequel.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 79 million copies as of last week, making it the fourth best-selling video game of all time. A re-release for modern consoles would help it claim third place sooner, rather than later. In contrast, the original Red Dead Redemption has sold less than 30 million copies across its lifetime, which is less than half the sequel’s total despite being available longer.

The timing also makes strategic sense given GTA 6’s delay to November 2026. With Rockstar’s biggest project pushed back, the company has considerable room in its release calendar to deploy updated versions of catalog titles. Red Dead Redemption, arriving December 2, 2025, fills a near-term slot, while Red Dead Redemption 2‘s enhanced version could arrive at any time in the following year without conflicting with GTA 6’s launch window.

The original Red Dead Redemption’s new version includes significant enhancements, even though it’s not a full remake. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions support 60 frames per second, improved image quality, HDR, and resolutions up to 4K. The Switch 2 version takes advantage of that console’s capabilities with 60fps, DLSS support, HDR, and mouse controls. Mobile versions feature touch-friendly control schemes adapted for phones and tablets.

Current owners on PlayStation 4, original Nintendo Switch, or digital backward-compatible Xbox One versions will receive complimentary digital upgrades. Save progress carries over on PlayStation and Switch versions, allowing players to continue where they left off rather than starting fresh.

Finally, the release will also be available through GTA+ Games Library and PlayStation Plus Game Catalog at no additional cost to subscribers.
