Red Dead Redemption Gets PC Makeover with 4K and Ultrawide Support

Saddle up, cowboys! The long wait is finally over. Rockstar Games has made it official—the original Red Dead Redemption is galloping its way onto Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Rockstar Games Launcher later this month. A staggering 14 years after the game’s initial debut on consoles, PC gamers can finally enjoy John Marston’s iconic journey mercifully soon – on October 29.

Rockstar’s decision to bring Red Dead Redemption to PC follows a familiar pattern. Much like their approach with Grand Theft Auto V, which saw a PC release a year after it first launched on consoles, Red Dead Redemption 2 made its way to desktops in 2019, a year after its initial release. Now, the original game is following suit, albeit with a much longer delay.

The PC version of Red Dead Redemption isn’t just a simple port. Rockstar has promised a host of enhancements and features tailored specifically for the PC gaming experience, such as native 4K resolution support with refresh rates of up to 144Hz on compatible hardware. This means John Marston and the breathtaking landscapes of the American frontier will be more visually stunning than ever.

In addition to the improved resolution, the game will support both ultrawide (21:9) and super ultrawide (32:9) monitor configurations, allowing for a more immersive gaming experience. HDR10 support is also included for better color depth and contrast.

For those who prefer a more traditional PC gaming setup, Rockstar has confirmed full keyboard and mouse functionality. This should provide players with precise control over aiming and movement, but more importantly there would have been riots if the port was somehow controller only.

Native support for Nvidia DLSS 3.7 and AMD FSR 3.0 upscaling technologies is also confirmed, along with Nvidia DLSS Frame Generation, which should help players achieve smoother framerates and improved visual quality, even on less powerful hardware.

Red Dead Redemption is widely considered one of the best games of its generation.

A broad suite of graphics options appear to be a focus for this port as well, another thing PC players find essential. Rockstar has mentioned adjustable draw distances and shadow quality settings, suggesting that players will have a much needed degree of control over the game’s visual fidelity.

It’s worth noting that while the PC version includes single-player content from both Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare, including bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition, it does not feature any multiplayer components.

This may disappoint some fans who were hoping to experience the game’s online modes on PC, but it allows the focus to remain squarely on the rich, narrative-driven single-player experience that made Red Dead Redemption a classic.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Red Dead Redemption follows John Marston, one of the most feared outlaws of his time, now forced by the government to hunt down his old gang members. Set against the backdrop of the American West in 1911, the classic game explores themes of loyalty, redemption, and the changing face of America as the frontier era comes to a close.

Its compelling narrative, memorable characters, and the vast open world earned it critical acclaim and numerous game of the year awards upon its original release. The Undead Nightmare expansion, included in this PC release, takes a sharp turn into horror territory. This standalone adventure sees John Marston facing off against hordes of the undead in a non-canonical zombie apocalypse scenario.

The timing of the release, just days before Halloween, seems particularly fitting given the inclusion of Undead Nightmare. PC gamers will have the perfect opportunity to dive into some Wild West zombie action as the spooky season reaches its peak, perfect when paired with the latest Red Dead Online update.

While pricing information has not yet been announced, Rockstar has promised to reveal preorder details later this week. Given the game’s age and previous pricing for some of its recent console re-releases, it’s likely that the PC version will be offered at a competitive price point.

With Red Dead Redemption now on PC, maybe Rockstar can port Red Dead Revolver as well, which received a potentially unintended nod from Capcom recently.
