Red Dead Redemption 2 Dominates PlayStation Charts for Third Consecutive Month

Rockstar Games just keeps on winning. Despite leaving Red Dead Redemption 2 out in the wild, the critically acclaimed title has maintained its stronghold on PlayStation charts. The Western epic has proven its staying power by claiming the top spot as the most downloaded PS4 game for the third consecutive month, even as it approaches its seventh anniversary.

This comes on the heels of Rockstar’s parent company announcing that Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed 70 million copies sold worldwide as the game also set a new record on Steam for really no apparent reason other than players just enjoy playing it—it certainly didn’t hurt that it was heavily discounted earlier this year.

The franchise as a whole has now reached a staggering 95 million copies sold, solidifying its place as one of the most successful gaming properties in history. This resurgence in player engagement has even encouraged the Red Dead Online community to relaunch the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign in hopes of garnering additional support and content updates from Rockstar.

A comprehensive report on the UK gaming market for 2024 has shed light on Red Dead Redemption 2’s continued success in the region. The game secured the seventh position in overall sales, moving an impressive 348,574 copies throughout the year, with a staggering 89.3% of all copies sold being digital downloads. This translates to 311,317 digital copies compared to just 37,257 physical discs sold. The breakdown of digital sales reveals that console players make up the majority, with 232,434 downloads, while PC gamers account for 78,883 copies.

Red Dead Redemption 2‘s continued success is both surprising and somehow expected. Anyone who’s played it before can tell you that its immersive open-world gameplay, stunning visuals, and compelling narrative deserve a playthrough, even at least once. The game’s ability to attract new players while retaining its existing fan base has allowed it to maintain its relevance years after its initial release. Streamers continue to discover it for the first time, further boosting its popularity.

With the series now approaching 100 million copies sold, it’s clear that there’s a strong demand for more content set in the Wild West. Unfortunately, Rockstar just doesn’t seem to have the capacity to juggle both Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto at the moment. It’s possible that the re-release of Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, which sold extremely well, will be the last entry in the series we’ll get for a while. But who knows? Rockstar could suddenly find itself having the time and resources to release something related to the franchise.

Perhaps we’ll get the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 that everyone else has been begging to get for years. It might not be in development as of late last year, but things could’ve easily changed since.
