This Is How You Play Red Dead Redemption on Your Phone

In case you missed it, Rockstar Games’ critically acclaimed western adventure from 2010, is now available on mobile devices for the first time in its history, bringing John Marston’s epic tale of revenge and redemption to iOS and Android platforms.

For 15 years, players who wanted to experience the dusty trails, dramatic shootouts, and morally complex storytelling of Red Dead Redemption needed access to dedicated gaming hardware, including the PC release and the re-release on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 over the past two years. Now, all you need is a smartphone and one of two payment options.

The game launched on Tuesday through two distinct versions catering to different types of players. The first option involves downloading the game through Netflix’s gaming service, which requires an active Netflix subscription but no additional purchase. Subscribers can go to the App Store or Google Play Store, download the game at no extra charge, and start playing immediately.

The second option allows players to purchase the game outright. This standalone version doesn’t require any subscription service and gives you permanent access to the complete game.

Both versions are functionally identical in terms of content and features, so the choice comes down to whether you already have Netflix or prefer to own games independently.

From a technical standpoint, getting Red Dead Redemption running on mobile devices required some specific system requirements. iOS users need devices running iOS 18.0 or later, while iPad users need iPadOS 18.0 or later. Android players need devices running version 10.0 or higher. Finally, the initial download from either the Google Play Store or App Store comes in around 2.74 gigabytes, but the final installed size exceeds 3 gigabytes once all additional content downloads complete.

Netflix has previous experience with Rockstar properties on mobile platforms. Two years ago, the streaming service added Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy to its mobile game catalog, giving subscribers access to three classic GTA titles.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the only mainline Rockstar title that isn’t available on modern platforms.

Unfortunately, given that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a graphically demanding title, we shouldn’t expect to see Dan House’s favorite Rockstar title to join Netflix and other mobile devices anytime soon.

For what it’s worth, though, Rockstar is reportedly still working on a re-release of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Nintendo Switch 2 as well as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
