Popular TV Star Wants to Play Arthur Morgan in Live-Action Red Dead Redemption Adaptation

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has made a bold declaration about bringing one of gaming’s most celebrated stories to the small screen.

The moment came when a fan posed what seemed like a simple question during a Q&A session. Would Morgan ever consider playing Arthur Morgan, the troubled outlaw protagonist from Red Dead Redemption 2, if the opportunity arose? His response was immediate and explosive.

The actor’s enthusiasm was so intense that he even joked about working for free, though he quickly backtracked. The crowd erupted in laughter as he painted a picture of studio executives calling him up, having heard about his willingness to forgo payment. While the free part was clearly said in jest, his genuine desire for the role is hard to deny.

Morgan revealed that westerns hold a special place in his heart above all other genres. He mentioned how his own son plays the game, adding another layer to his appreciation for the source material, which is also a personal favorite of Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser.

However, all this is easier said than done.

Arthur is one of the most complex and emotionally rich characters in gaming, and Red Dead Redemption 2 received universal acclaim for its unprecedented attention to detail, creating a living, breathing world that felt more like an interactive movie than a traditional video game.

But we’re not saying it’s impossible either. Recent successes like HBO’s The Last of Us and Amazon’s Fallout have proven that game-to-screen translations can work when handled with care and respect for the source material. These shows have managed to satisfy both longtime fans and newcomers by staying true to the spirit of the games while making necessary adjustments for the television format.

Of course, while Morgan’s words could definitely help speak a potential live-action into existence, we can’t say for certain that the interest he’s drummed up so far is enough to convince Rockstar to consider.

At the moment, Rockstar is too busy working on Grand Theft Auto 6 to think about other projects, including Red Dead Redemption.

If it’s any consolation, though, he’s definitely gotten people talking about the possibility of a Red Dead Redemption adaptation, which comes right off the backs of a resurgence in fan interest following the re-release of Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch 2, and Netflix.

Fingers crossed, Rockstar will reconsider the idea of a live-action adaptation of Red Dead Redemption after the launch of the long-rumored modernized version of the fourth-best-selling video game of all time.
