According to well-known industry insider NateTheHate, Rockstar Games’ critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2.
While Nintendo and other video game companies have remained tight-lipped about upcoming titles, we’ve been getting news about the potential arrival of certain titles, including the 2018 game.
NateTheHate reaffirmed his earlier claims about the western epic making its way to Nintendo’s platform. However, he confirmed that he’s unsure when Rockstar will make this official.
According to the insider, there are two possible scenarios that will be revealed. The first possibility is that Rockstar itself will make the announcement, independent of any Nintendo events. The second, and perhaps more exciting possibility for Nintendo fans, is that the announcement could come during an upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation.
The potential arrival of Red Dead Redemption 2 on a Nintendo platform carries massive implications.
Rockstar might have been dripfeeding their games to Nintendo platforms in recent years, but the company’s two most recent titles, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, remain nowhere to be seen on the Nintendo Switch.
This absence is particularly surprising given the massive success of the original Nintendo Switch and the robust sales of Red Dead Redemption on the same platform.
Red Dead Redemption 2‘s technical demands have long been considered too ambitious for the current Switch hardware. But we’re talking about the Switch 2, which is a substantially more powerful console compared to its predecessor.
Nintendo itself has a lot to gain from this release. The inclusion of such a high-profile third-party title could help continue to improve Nintendo’s relationship with major publishers.
Historically, Nintendo consoles have sometimes struggled to attract the biggest multiplatform releases due to hardware limitations.
The Switch 2 is already getting titles like Cyberpunk 2077. If it can run a game as demanding as Red Dead Redemption 2 as well, it opens the door for many other major titles that have previously skipped Nintendo platforms.
This news also raises questions about what compromises, if any, might be made to get the game running on Switch 2.
Will it feature the full experience available on other platforms, or will certain visual elements be scaled back? How will the game perform in both docked and handheld modes? We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to get an answer to these questions.
In the meantime, Red Dead fans can keep themselves busy by enjoying the latest content update for Red Dead Online.
