Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online players might finally be getting what theyâve been asking for since the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X launched over three years ago.
Reddit user u/Livid-Army-5857 recently discovered what appears to be an online migration option on Rockstar Supportâs website that would allow players to transfer their Red Dead Online accounts from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
While both the single-player and online components of the 2018 title run on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, players have been stuck with the last-generation versions, unable to take full advantage of the newer systemsâ enhanced capabilities.
The âOnline Migrationâ option is now visible on the Rockstar Support website for Red Dead Online.

This potential migration feature was spotted on Rockstarâs support pages, though it remains unclear whether this was an accidental early reveal or deliberate preparation for an upcoming announcement.
The option specifically mentioned transitioning accounts to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, suggesting that Rockstar may be working on native versions of Red Dead Online for these platforms, which has been rumored for a while.
The timing of this discovery is particularly interesting. After its âdeathâ years ago, Rockstar Games recently released an update for Red Dead Online.
Red Dead Online launched alongside Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 and became a standalone experience in 2020. Despite its initial success, the game has struggled to maintain the same level of popularity and support as Rockstarâs other online venture, Grand Theft Auto Online.
The lack of a proper next-generation version is a particular sore spot. While Grand Theft Auto V has received multiple re-releases over the course of its lifetime, Rockstar has left Red Dead fans hanging.
The backward-compatible version, while functional, doesnât take full advantage of features like the PS5âs adaptive triggers or the increased processing power of new consoles.
Itâs not like the Red Dead franchise as a whole isnât selling well, either. The award-winning 2018 game remains one of the best-selling games to this day despite the relative lack of support.
If this migration option proves legitimate, it bodes well for the franchiseâs future. Native current-generation versions would likely bring improved visuals, including better textures, enhanced lighting, and possibly ray tracing support. Loading times, notoriously long in the current version, would see a dramatic reduction, thanks to the SSD technology in newer consoles.
Better yet, this could renew interest in the series for yet another few years, perhaps enough to bring players to Red Dead Online and help revive its dead community.
Itâs worth noting that Rockstar has not made any official announcement regarding Red Dead Online migration or next-generation versions. The company is known for keeping its cards close to its chest, often revealing major updates with little advance warning.
With Take-Two Interactive set to hold its next earnings call on August 7, thereâs a chance that we could get a confirmation close to that date.
