Red Dead Redemption 2 Actor Reveals His Preferred Ending

Roger Clark, best known for lending his likeness and voice for Red Dead Redemption 2‘s protagonist, Arthur Morgan, recently confirmed his thoughts about what he believes is the “canon” ending for the game. This should already go without saying, but just in case, consider this as an official spoiler warning.

In a recent interview with Gamology, Clark doubled down on his earlier thoughts, saying that while there’s no “good” ending in Red Dead Redemption 2, he does believe that one is the “best” for Morgan, saying:

As you may know, Arthur has four different endings. There’s a high and low Honor version of going to help John, and there’s a high and a low Honor version of going back for the money. I never see much point of going back for the money. Arthur’s days are numbered, what’s money gonna do him anyway? He might as well help John. So I think going back to help John, with high Honor, for me is my canon ending.

Clark’s decision to choose the high Honor option doesn’t come as a surprise. Many fans agree this is also the best ending in Red Dead Redemption 2, or at least the canon one. However, it’s interesting that Clark believes there’s no sense for Arthur to go back for the money. While Clark’s stance makes sense, going back for the money would’ve done Arthur, and in turn John Marston, good.

Part of what makes Red Dead Redemption 2 such an iconic game is it lets players make choices. They’re in charge of what Arthur does in the game and how he behaves, all the way through the game’s ending. Even though players have no say about what happens to Arthur by the end of the game, their actions leading up to it will have an impact. And while the game does try to portray Arthur as an honorable character, Red Dead Redemption 2 gives players the freedom to do what they want.

Rockstar Games is smart enough to avoid confirming the “true” ending for Red Dead Redemption 2.

If nothing else, Clark’s recent statement should give players a good reason to boot up Red Dead Redemption 2 again if only to try to recreate any one if not all four of the game’s different endings.

Unfortunately, we don’t think we’ll find out the true ending for Red Dead Redemption 2 anytime soon. Rockstar purposely kept it open so players could come up with their own conclusions. Messing with it in a future Red Dead game could affect the emotional connections players have made with Arthur Morgan’s story over the years.

A new Red Dead game isn’t in development as Rockstar Games is deep into Grand Theft Auto 6’s development. However, a PC port of Red Dead Redemption is in development and could be announced soon.
