Red Dead Redemption 2 Dominates PlayStation Download Charts Yet Again in December 2025

Red Dead Redemption 2 refuses to fade away. PlayStation’s official December 2025 download charts are in, and Rockstar’s sprawling Western masterpiece has once again claimed the #1 most downloaded PS4 game in both North America and Europe.

For those who’ve been following RDR2‘s remarkable longevity, this isn’t exactly surprising. The game has now topped the PS4 download charts in 10 out of 12 months throughout 2025. The back-to-back chart-topping performance is amazong considering the game launched in October 2018 and is still without a next-gen enhancement update.

So what’s driving these numbers? December’s Christmas Special Event certainly didn’t hurt. Of course, seasonal content alone doesn’t explain seven years of sustained dominance. The game’s consistent quarterly sales growth points to something deeper.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has now sold 79 million copies worldwide as of Take-Two Interactive’s November 2025 earnings report. That makes it the fourth best-selling video game in history, surpassing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and trailing only Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, and Wii Sports.

The game officially tied Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as the fifth best-selling game ever earlier in 2025 before pushing past it. The Red Dead Redemption franchise has now crossed 106 million units sold combined

Earlier this year, RDR2 shattered its concurrent player record on Steam with nearly 100,000 players online simultaneously. That surge coincided with record-low pricing driving new players into Arthur Morgan’s world at just $14.99.

December’s chart success wasn’t solely about RDR2. The original Red Dead Redemption’s multi-platform December release on December 2 helped. The original Red Dead Redemption proved its PlayStation appeal back in August 2023 when its initial PS4/Switch port immediately topped PlayStation Store charts. This time around, the expanded accessibility likely drove many newcomers to pick up RDR2 as either a sequel experience or franchise entry point.

Rumors of an anticipated next-gen upgrade potentially arriving for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 have also kept the game in conversations throughout 2025. Whether that materializes remains to be seen.

Red Dead Redemption 2 being one of the all-time best-selling games on PlayStation stopped being news years ago. What’s remarkable is that it keeps adding to that legacy.

November and December’s events built on that momentum with Thanksgiving turkey hunting bonuses, double Trader payouts, RDR2 and comprehensive Christmas celebrations.

In the meantime, Red Dead Online continues contributing to the game’s staying power, which is something few expected after Rockstar appeared to abandon it in 2022.
surprise Red Dead Online content update from July 2025’s “Strange Tales of the West Volume 1” brought zombie-themed Telegram Missions after a three-year content drought. That unexpected revival signaled Rockstar hadn’t completely forgotten about outlaws in the frontier.

Seven years after launch, with no native current-gen version, limited Red Dead Online support, and competition from countless newer releases, Rockstar’s Western epic remains the PS4 game players want most. December 2025 was simply the latest chapter in a story that shows no signs of ending.

The frontier, it seems, isn’t done with us yet.
