Rockstar Games has quietly pulled the plug on their Official Companion App for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The removal happened on August 19, 2025, as confirmed by Rockstar. However, as per the usual, the company didn’t make any announcements or send out notifications. Players only started noticing when new users tried to download the app and came up empty-handed.
By the time the remaining few players who had actually known about the app caught wind of the removal, it had already been gone for over a week.

For those who never experienced it, the Red Dead Redemption 2 Official Companion App was more than just a gimmick. Released alongside the game back in 2018, it transformed your smartphone into Arthur Morgan’s personal assistant. The real-time synced map feature allowed players to bask in the vastness of the Western landscape without cluttering their TV screen with the HUD.
The app basically created a more immersive experience for the award-winning 2018 title. Some hardcore fans even played the entire game with the HUD turned off, relying solely on the companion app for navigation.
But the app was more than a map. It let players browse Arthur’s journal entries, complete with his sketches and personal thoughts, right from their phones. The in-game catalogs and shop inventories were also accessible, making it easy to plan purchases without pausing the action. It was like having a piece of the Old West in your pocket.
With that said, we’d be lying if we didn’t say this was a long-time coming. Despite the commercial success of Red Dead Redemption 2, the companion app hadn’t received a meaningful update in years. It never even gained compatibility with the PC version of the game, which came later. Players using PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S consoles through backward compatibility also reported functionality issues that were never addressed.
As for why Rockstar removed the app now after years of neglect, we’ll never know. It may havesomething to do with the rumored re-release of Red Dead Redemption 2. If so, Rockstar might release an updated companion app for the still-unconfirmed remastered version of the game.
Fortunately, anyone who previously downloaded the app can still access it through their purchase history on either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The app continues to function normally for these users, and those who bought the Complete Official Guide within the app retain access to that content as well.
Speaking of Red Dead Redemption 2, Graham Greene, the actor behind the voice and motion capture of Rains Fall, passed away at 73 years old on September 1.
